Located in the heart of South Melbourne, the facility was known as Lifesaver Studios throughout the 1990s. In 2004 renovations were completed, 'The Base Recording Studios' was christened and for the next 3 years it continued to cater to freelance engineers and producers within the Australian music industry.

In 2007 Phil Threlfall became the in-house engineer and installed his Amek G2520 console, outboard, microphone and instrument collection into Studio 1, and within a few short years had firmly consolidated himself and The Base as a world class facility by delivering numerous Gold and Platinum albums, and earning both nominations and winning Aria awards for his work.

In 2010, The Base also became home to Affinity Music Group, with producers Styalz Fuego and Nic Martin settling into Studios 2 & 3. The studio was able to provide the support and facilities needed to deliver their own award winning material, and the partnership continues to be a strength to this day.

In 2015 Phil purchased The Base, and throughout the following years has continued to produce excellent work as an engineer and producer, adding additional Aria Awards and Nominations as well as a Grammy Certificate for his engineering work on the song What A Beautiful Name, to the list of achievements and accolades.

20 years on from The Base first opening it’s doors, The Base remains a world class facility and one of Australia's most prolific and respected boutique studios.

Phil and the team welcome all to The Base - whether it's a writing, recording, mixing or even just for a chat about all things musical - Don't hesitate to get in touch and arrange a visit!
